Interview with Tina from Dark Heart Designs

When did your love for makeup begin?
I loved makeup when I was a child. I used to get into my mom’s all the time, and she would let me as long as it wasn’t in public, and from the looks that my father gave me when he saw it, that was probably a good thing.
Is there a story behind your company’s name?
I originally thought of the name when I was doing some sketches in my notebook while I was still doing a lot of writing and drawing. I didn’t actually use it though, until I started working on websites and web design. I did that for about a year, got into makeup, and I loved the name because I always felt it was what I wanted to portray, so I kept it and turned it into a real brand.
What is your company’s main goal?
I want Dark Heart to inspire people more than anything. I want it to be a brand that makes you feel like you’re a part of something, and you’re special. I want people to take pride in their selves and feel confident in their own skin. I’ve thought of cosmetics as more of an art supply than a beauty enhancement, and I want people to know that I sincerely believe that they make the makeup beautiful, not the other way around.
How long have you been in business?
Dark Heart officially opened a shop on Etsy on March 19th , 2010
What is your favorite color you have created?
Oh, now that’s a hard one. I tend to wear Limelight more than any of the other colors, but I don’t know that I could choose. I love every one of them.
What is your favorite Commercial Brand of Make Up?
I think I would have to say Urban Decay or Illmasqua. I don’t have much of it, but I love their style and branding
What inspires you most?
I’d have to say a combination of music, movies, and books is where I get most, if not all of the inspiration for my products and colors, but it’s the customers that are my biggest inspiration.
Who is your biggest supporter of your business? (other than yourself lol)
The customers! They keep my business going. They give me a reason to keep doing something I really enjoy, and that means a lot to me. As for me, my family and friends keep me going, even when its midnight, and I’m exhausted with a bunch of orders and a day job to be at the next morning.
How did you choose your logo?
The first draft of my logo started as a sketch in my notebook, along with the company name. The newer version of the logo was drawn for me by a friend, and I feel both portray the brand, but the newer version does so a lot better, and I love the Burtonesque feel of it.
What do you like most about having your own company?
There is nothing more incredible than the knowledge that being able to do something you actually enjoy means something to others. I cannot possibly express how grateful I am to all the people who help make my dream a reality.
What do you like least about having your own company?
I think the hardest part of having your own company is that its so easy for things to get too personal. In my experience, indie companies usually have other things going on, or lives that require them to divide their attention between that, and their companies. There really isn't any 9-5 in indie so its not like there's time to work, and time to take care of personal things.

I know my day job leaves me very limited time to work on things for Dark Heart (2-3 hours a day), and most customers don't know what your situation is. When orders take longer to get sent out, get lost, there's something wrong with the product, there's something missing, or it just doesn't suit the customer, its really easy to get your feelings hurt, and possibly respond badly if you don't take the time to distance yourself and be professional.

Do you have any suggestions for consumers who are looking to buy handmade products?
Know your ingredients! I can't stress this enough. Its really easy to do a little homework, and find out what you're putting on your face. It can also tell you a lot about the product. Different ingredients have different texture, slip (how the product applies), and wear differently on different people. If you find a product you really like, and you know what is in it, you're more likely to be able to match similar products.

Being ingredient intelligent can help you determine what to buy, where to buy from, what products are vegan, dye free, what you may or may not be allergic to, and what products can really live up to their claims (organic, dye free, natural, etc).

Interview with Brianna from Imma Be Beauty

When did your love for make up begin?
I've always had a love for makeup, but I never really knew what I was doing with it, and I didn't experiment with it much. I got really into makeup, and learning how to wear it properly and doing a bunch of new things with it back in March when I became a promoter/model for Southern Sweetheart cosmetics.

What is better in your opinion Primer or a base?
Honestly I've never used a base. From what I've learned, primer is used to prevent creasing, whereas a base is used to help get the makeup to stick better to your lids and give you a more pigmented look. The primer I use works fairly well as a base, as it's a little sticky and gives me the bright colors I want. I really need to pick out some kid of base and try it out.

What type of brushes do you prefer?
I haven't tried many brushes. I love the ELF ones. The ones I'm currently using are Got a handle on it cosmetic brush set from Claire's, and they're great. I definitely prefer the firmer brushes.

Have you ever purchased from an Indie Company? If so which ones?
Southern Sweetheart Cosmetics is the only indie company I've bought/tried, and I'm more than satisfied with them. There are a couple Indie companies that I'm looking at trying out.

What is your "go-to" look?
Personally I think you can never go wrong with a smokey-eye look. I always like to add some color to it. I love doing a purple smokey eye with SSC's jokers wild. My other go to look is a blend of bright colors (usually blue, green and either yellow or purple)

Who is your favorite commercial brand?
Like I said, I wasn't into makeup much until the last couple months, so honestly I haven't tried many companies out there. I love MAC and ELF.

What inspires you the most when doing make up?
I can get inspired by so many different things. I get inspired by my fellow makeup ladies, by songs or movies, random pictures I see on the internet... I can really get inspiration anywhere.

Which do you prefer Indie or Commercial companies? Why?
I prefer indie companies. Say you had a question about an eyeshadow. If you want to talk to the OWNER of Southern Sweetheart Cosmetics about one of her products, you simply send her a message with your question, and she is right there with an answer. What would happen if you tried that with a commercial company?

What is your favorite product that you own?
I'm in love with my waterproof eyeliner pen from ELF right now. I just got it and I can't seem to put it down. Other than that, I'd say my favorite shadow, by far, is SSC's jokers wild.

What do you like most about buying from Indie Companies?
I like supporting the "underdog". I love that I'm helping someone's dream come true and helping someone out food on their family's table, or helping them pay for college, etc. I don't want to help buy some CEO a new top of the line car, they can do that on their own.

What do you like least about buying from Indie Companies?
Not speaking from personal experience here, because I have had nothing but positive experiences, but I've seen other's have a lot of problems with fake people in the industry. People who don't do the work but claim it as their own. Who repackage or misrepresent their company.

Do you have any suggestions for consumers who are looking to buy handmade products?
First of all, check out Southern Sweetheart Cosmetics =P Aside from that, I'd say research the company. Go to youtube and type in [company name] reviews. Don't be afraid to ask questions. And if you're still not sure buy (or win- a lot of indie companies have giveaways all the time) some samples and try them out for yourself.

Interview with Kas from Pretty Addictions

When did your love for make up begin?
Believe it or not I actually used to be a major tom boy.  My mom used to get so upset that I would rather wear baggy jeans and a t-shirt along with my hair thrown in a ponytail. I remember being asked by a friend and her mom why I wasn't into experimenting with makeup.Slowly I started coming around and getting girlier. About 5 years ago after suffering from insomnia, I kept running across blogs and Youtube. I would see girls do these amazing things and thought to myself I MUST learn how to do this too! The rest is history, along with a lot of money from my bank account!

Is there a story behind your companies name?
Well I think whenever a girl is getting ready for the day or night her main goal is to essentially feel pretty. Addiction  pretty much sums up us makeup junkies feeling when it comes to our pretties! I sometimes think that the word addiction get the bad wrap for always being bad. However not all addictions are dirty and not all addictions will make you look like total crap!

What is your companies main goal? Eventually I think it would be absolutely awesome to be the pretty lady standing in the shoes of those I admire in the beauty industry, so have my brand be a house hold name for millions of MUA's out there. I've love to see my products on the shelves next to big names! Ultimately for right now though my main goal is to do the best that I can possibly do to satisfy my customers in a well rounded way. I must deliver the best customer service possible as well as a quality product, they just go hand in hand!

How long have you been in business? Pretty Addictions was officially live March 15th 2011

What is your favorite color you have created? My favorite shadow created would have to be Sober and my favorite blush is Sex Kitten!

What is your favorite Commercial Brand of Make Up? If I have to choose a brand of shadows besides my own I would have to go with Inglot or Sugarpill.

What inspires you most? The love and support of my customers. I honestly look at each one of them as a friend. Not a day goes by that I don't look at my customers and just smiles because it blows my mind that a simple idea in my head is a reality to so many others! I love being able to share a piece of myself with so many others.

Who is your biggest supporter of your business? (other than yourself lol) I would have to say my husband. He has been my backbone from the beginning. He knows how much time, dedication, patience and heart goes into everything that I do. Pretty Addictions is my biggest passion in life and he truly respects that.

How did you choose your logo? How can you go wrong with leopard print?

What do you like most about having your own company? I love the fact that I have been able to connect with so many others out there that I probably never would have met outside of this. I also love being able to have something with my name on it and be proud of it.

What do you like least about having your own company? I absolutely can't stand the pettiness that goes on and the misunderstandings of others. I think sometimes others forget that us as small business owners are human too and mistakes can happen as well as breaks are needed too. If I ever don't respond to a Facebook message from you or a email please don't take it to heart, I would never ever purposely ignore anyone no matter what the question.

Do you have any suggestions for consumers who are looking to buy handmade products? Do your research and ask questions! Look for reviews!!!! If your still not sure, purchase a couple samples! That way you have an idea of how the company's customers service is as well as what their product is like.

Thanks for doing this interview Kas! It was great getting inside your mind for a bit <3

Pretty Addictions Review

Recently I made my very first purchase with Pretty Addictions. I also received 10 clam-shells in a swap with Kas Swint the company owner. Pretty Addictions' customer service was quite amazing. Kas is a very sweet lady who always does her best to answer any questions about her products that anyone may have. My order was sent out within 3 days of placing which is very impressive and it came in a little gold bubble mailer. When I opened my mailbox and saw the gold the first thought that came to my mind was "Ive found the golden ticket". Once I got  the package inside I opened it to find an adorably wrapped cheetah print bag tied with a hot pink sparkly bow :) It made my day, along with an invoice of my purchase. The colors I received were all very beautiful & blend very easily. I will be ordering again in the very near future.
